There are three steps in the Respiratory system:
* Exchange of gases
* The transportation of gases i.e. O2 and CO2
* The cellular respiration where glucose gets converted into energy.
Exchange of gases:
If the volume of the system increases the pressure will decrease to maintain equilibrium and
vice versa.When the volume of the lungs ↑ the pressure is known as intrapulmonary
pressure. This pressure is below the environmental pressure and the air rushes in through
the respiratory path.
Volume of the lungs ↓ - Intrapulmonary pressure ↑ - Air rushes out of the lungs
The Respiratory system is located in the thoracic cavity. Here the rib cage is present. Within
the rib cage there is a domed shaped partition called diaphragm. Within the rib cage there
are pleural membranes enclosing a fluid-filled space surrounding the lungs.
The right lung is divided into three parts namely the right superior, right middle and right
inferior.The left lung is smaller to accommodate the heart.
Both the lungs are connected with small tubular bronchi which unites into the trachea. The
trachea has C-shaped rings of cartilage on its surface.
The trachea leads to the pharynx, which is connected to the nostrils. The air molecules enter
the nostrils going down to the pharynx and trachea, then air is departed into both the lungs
through the bronchi. These bronchi further divide repeatedly to form bronchioles in a network
of alveoli.
Each alveoli is surrounded in a network of capillaries. As the alveolar capillaries carry blood,
the oxygen from the lungs is absorbed by the RBCs present in the blood. They have
