1. A Raising in the Sun
In a well-argued essay, discuss how gender stereotypes in Lorraine Hansberry’s A
Raising in the Sun contribute to the situation the Youngers find themselves in.

Gender Stereotypes in A Raising in the Sun

Lorraine Hansberry has predominantly displayed the theme of gender in the play A Raising
in the Sun. The author uses the topic of feminism and masculinity to bring out the different
perspectives of men and women from the 1920s through to the 1950s. The dialogues,
characterization and stereotypical thinking of the characters, both males and females in
the play, bring out the stringent views of masculinity and feminism as it existed in the
African American community. Both women and men were expected to behave and think in
certain ways to stick to their gender standards. Failure to adhere to these standards led to
harsh criticisms from both genders especially the men. Hansberry uses various techniques
to portray the gender stereotypes in her play A Raising in the Sun.

Hansberry portrays gender stereotypes by depicting Walter as man who is more strongly
affected by his economic situation compared to the women around him. Being the only
man in the house, Walter feels that he should be in control of the economics of the house
as his beloved it is the responsibility of the man of the house to provide for the family. This
situation is made worse by the fact that Walter is surrounded by women of different
generations: the traditional mama, dedicated Ruth, and Progressive Beneatha. Walter feels
obligated to help the house with financial issues and the fact that he is unable to solve
these issues makes him mad. The author clearly portrays the manner in which the society
perceived African American men in the 1920s regarding their family obligation and financial
matter.

In my opinion, Walter would not have the economic situation as strongly as he did if he was
a woman. Due to the gender stereotypical thinking that he possessed, the economic
hurdles that he is passing through makes him feel less of man. He feels that he should be
working and making money to support the family. I also think that the Walter is mad about
the economic situation he is being the only man in the house. Suppose the household had
another hardworking man, Walter would not have felt as obligated as he is since the other
