Teaching Tips
1. The Global Leaders for Tomorrow Environment Task Force publishes a ranking of
countries according to their Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI). The ESI is a
measure of a country’s progress toward environmental sustainability based on a set of
core indicators. Ask students to visit http://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu and view the
2008 ESI report and spreadsheet. The summary for policymakers is at the first
website. For the complete report, go to http://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu. Make
special note of Canada on page 184. Where is Canada in the ranking? On what
indicators was Canada given high scores? Low scores? Now look at the archives
from 2001 and compare those data to the current Canadian data. Has Canada
improved its scores or lost ground? In which areas have we changed the most? The
main pages for the Center for International Earth Science Information Network are
found at www.ciesin.columbia.edu.
