Motherboards Questions & Answers
Motherboard - ANSWERSA circuit board that contains all of the computer system's
critical components.

Direct Components - ANSWERSComponents on a motherboard that are directly
installed, some are replaceable(CPU and CMOS battery) others are soldered into place
and if they break the entire board will have to be replaced(RAM slots and drive
connectors)

CPU (Central Processing Unit) - ANSWERSSilicon microchip that processes all
instructions, whether they are entered through user input or submitted by a computer
program, it must be kept cool as it generates heat when processing instructions

CMOS battery - ANSWERSA small battery that is typically a lithium coin cell, that
provides continuous power to the computers real-time clock and maintains the system
BOIS settings. They have a lifetime of 2-10 years, if the battery begins to fail it will
cause incorrect system dates or loss of BIOS settings when the PC is powered off

RAM slot - ANSWERSHolds a memory chip for the computer, most end-user computers
have 2-4 slots but servers and high-end workstations might have more. Slots in colored
pairs usually indicate dual-channel memory which should be installed in pairs

Chipset - ANSWERSSet of integrated chips that routes communication between the
computer components and the CPU - Northbridge & Southbridge chips.

Northbridge Chip - ANSWERSConnects directly to the CPU via the Front Side Bus also
directly connects to the RAM and graphics components of the computer, so they can
communicate more directly with the CPU. (To try reducing cost and improve
performance newer motherboards incorporate many Northbridge chip functions onto the
CPU itself.
