In this assignment I will be explaining the main considerations when planning and
preparing for major incidents before explaining the role of the organisations involved
in planning for major incidents. Lastly I will be carrying out a tabletop scenario for a
major incident before analysing and evaluating the tabletop scenario.
P6: For the pass grade I will be explaining the main considerations when planning
and preparing for major incidents.
The main need for emergency planning is to make the emergency services more
effective and efficient when responding to emergency incidents.
Plans for major incidents will already be prepared for all of the services in case an
emergency incident was to occur, this allows anyone who responds to the scene will
be fully prepared and able to follow the procedures from the plan that's in place
which would have been practiced many times this makes the services look very
professional.
It is key that all emergency services and agencies work together to be as effective as
possible by sharing information between each other which is probably the most
important part of emergency planning to respond to an emergency incident.
To allow everything to be done properly all those involved in the planning will have
access to any resources they need, other agencies will need to know their roles,
those who will be responding to the incident need to be highly skilled to be able to
carry out the necessary procedures and must have confidence to work together with
other responders.
The plans for a major incident are conducted by the Category 1 responders and they
would of identified possible risks which could be a threat or hazard that could cause
damage to the environment, individuals, the community and other organisations.
There are five elements in emergency planning: response, recovery, assessment,
preparedness and prevention. I will be talking about the response in P7.
Recovery-
This stage of a major incident is the after effects of the incident and its aim is to
make the area affected as normal as possible allowing people to do every day tasks.
This all depends on the type of incident, scale and the impact it has had on the
community. A good example of this is flooding which many have experienced over
the last few years, severe flooding often results in many losing their homes and
belongings for a certain period of time, although the after effects of flooding could be
polluted water which could have contaminated properties and cause a risk of disease
to the public. The job of bringing the community back to normal in this case is the
local authority which would need to fully cooperate and build contracts with building
contractors, engineers and voluntary agencies to provide support for the individuals
affected.
