What is Robert Nozick's idea of the "experience machine"? Why is it an objection to
hedonism? - ANSWER - He says that people could plug into a machine and experience
everything they desire in life

argument:
1) according to hedonism, two lives would go equally well if they experience the same
pleasures and pains
2) but, a life outside the experience machine would go better than a life plugged in, even
if they both are involved in the same pleasures and pains
3) so, hedonism is false because people do not just want to plug in, part of the
improvement to well-being comes from actually doing and accomplishing a task.

Explain the "False Happiness" objection to hedonism. - ANSWER - 1) if hedonism is
true, happiness makes the same contribution to well-being whether it is based on true or
false beliefs (ex: two happily married women, one with a faithful husband, one with an
unknowingly cheating husband)

2) But, happiness based on false beliefs contributes less to well-being

3) so, hedonism is false because we would obviously look at the two relationships and
say that the one with a faithful husband had a better life, even if the other women felt
they had the same amount of happiness.

What is autonomy, and how could someone fail to have autonomy? - ANSWER - the
capacity to guide your life by your own free choice

fail to have it:
- excessive political control (ex: school is mandatory, must wear a seatbelt)
- misinformation (ex: doctor does not give you all the information on whats up)
- interference with one's mental abilities (ex: drugging someone)

How does the value of autonomy present a problem for hedonism? - ANSWER - 1) if
hedonism is true, autonomy makes a person's life go well only insofar as it contributes
to his happiness
2) autonomy makes a persons life go well, even if it doesn't make him happier
3) hedonism is false

Explain the "Life's trajectory" and "Unhappiness as a symptom" objections to hedonism.
- ANSWER - *life's trajectory*: if person A's life starts good but ends bad and person B's
life starts bad but ends good, than hedonists would say they had equally good lives, but
anyone else would say person B had a better life
