You have to read 7 novels for your oral exam, which will be held during the 1 st, 2nd and 3rd test
week in your 5th year. As stated in your PTA:
2 books before 1980; a minimum of 1500 pages and 7 different writers.
In 4-HAVO you will have to read at least 4 novels (one will be Divergent, for all students).
You can find the novels in the library of the school, if you wish to read a novel from another
source you will have to consult your teacher if it is acceptable. You are not allowed to read
more than one book from one author. (your teacher may make an exception. Check first)
Some advice on how to go about reading and discussing these novels.
You shouldn’t look up all the words that you don’t understand, only if you lose the essence of
the story should you use a dictionary. As you read it is quite helpful to make short notes on
the story and on the main characters. Try to keep track of the relationships between the main
characters. It is a good idea not to procrastinate, read novels according to the schedule your
teacher will tell you. If your book review is filed late and you miss the deadline, it will cost
you a resit (herkansing!) If you like a book, tell your classmates!
You write your book review for two reasons:
1. To show your teacher that you have read and understood the book.
2. To use in preparation for the oral exam.
Book review questions (each question should be answered in between 75 - 100
words).
1 What is the connection between the title and the book? Explain in detail with examples
from the book. How does the title relate to the main character/s?
The tittle “one of Us Is Lying” fits the story well, because it is about secrets and lies. It
shows one of the four main characters – Bronwyn, Nate, Addy or Cooper—lying about
Simon’s death. The book reveals that although everyone has a secret, no one killed
Simon. Simon planned his own death to blame them. The title points to the theme of
lying, because everyone is trying to hide something and it is difficult to truly trust
someone.
2 Characterization: What kind of person is/are the main character/s? In what ways does
that become clear to you as a reader? Explain with examples from the book.
The main character in “One of Us Is Lying” change a lot during the story, Bronwyn is
smart and always follows the rules, but becomes tougher when her secrets emerge.
Nate, the “bad boy,” shows that he also has a soft side through his difficult life. Addy,
who used to follow others, becomes stronger and more independent after breaking up
her relationship. Cooper, the sports star, struggles with who he really is and hides his
orientation. These traits are evident through their actions and the secrets Simon
almost reveals.
3 Who is your favourite character in the book and why? Explain with details of what he/she
