Zo...
Recent research on interventions with robotic animals for elderly with dementia shows
positive effects on social behavior, agitation/aggression and quality of life. Behavioral
improvements are observed as a result of increased relaxation caused by the intervention with
robotic animals. EVB+-clients have difficulty regulating their stress level without the help of
someone else. As a result, their well-being and quality of life can decrease, with the
undesirable side effect of more behavioral problems. In this qualitative study is investigated
through explorative observational research, whether the use of a robotic cat influences the
stress level of EVB+-clients and their caregivers. The behavior of EVB+-clients has been
observed during nine measurements. After operationalization the concept of stress level, the
caregivers have scored the stress level felt by themselves on a stress meter by means of a
Likert scale, during the nine measurements. The sample consisted of eight EVB+-clients
(N=8) and three caregivers (N+3). The research was split up into three phases: a phase
without a robot cat, a phase to get used to the robot cat and a final phase with the robot cat.
Each phase consisted of three measurement. The use of the robot cat had a positive effect on
the stress level of six EVB+-clients, no demonstrable effect on one client, and for one client
measurements could not be taken due to environmental conditions. The use of the robot cat
turned out to have a positive effect on the stress level of all caregivers.
Few methods, treatments and diagnostic instrument are available for the benefit of EVB+-
clients, and research involving this group is scarce. More research is needed to improve the
well-being and quality of life of EVB+-clients and this study aims to contribute to this.
However, to draw validated conclusions, the research group should be larger. This study
serves as a first step towards a larger-scale follow-up study.
