• Boundary crossing: emerging or justified
• Boundary violation: for own gratification
Psychologist use the relationship to bring about change and must set optimum boundaries
Functions of boundaries:
• Reduce the risk of power advantage – to not violate the respect for humanity principle
• Boundaries assist client – psychologist provide competent services in line with fidelity principle
• Gives structure, guidance and framework to the psychologist-client relationship
• Enhance effective service delivery
• Reduce risk of over dependence of long term clients
• Help control strong emotions of therapy
• Non-maleficence – do not harm clients: Structure protects uncertain clients (e.g. Intimacy, dependence issues) r
educe harm to self, and reduce manipulation of clients
• Know own boundaries , maintain objectivity, prevent enmeshment and misuse of power
• Ethics of care perspective – works on the autonomy and beneficence principle – one is free to negotiate boun

• Ethics of justice: works under the humanity, and fidelity principle do not exploit people, and provide competent
service
• Make boundaries publicly known, look at client factors, give space, look at public morality
