Task 1 - P1 - Explain the concepts associated with nutritional health
Concepts
Food - Food is a type of object that is in a solid or liquid state that is edible. Food is eaten to provide
us with energy for our bodies to keep running. Food can be eaten by it going through the mouth. If
an individual is unable to take in food by mouth, then food can be taken by a tube.
Diet – A diet is normally the food and drink a person consumes. This is when a person begins watch-
ing their daily calorie intake, it becomes is different sometimes. Most people go on diets to lose
weight or just not eat as much food. So, if a person says they’re ‘going on a diet’, they mean they are
lowering their calorie intake for a Certain amount of time, therefore they will not have to burn as
much calories to lose the weight. Or if someone says “I like your diet”, it just means the person likes
what type of food they are eating on a regular basis. A basic diet contains veg, protein and carbs etc.
Meals – a meal is an averaged size amount of food a person eats. This is usually when food is given
at a certain time of the day. A meal will be served 3 times a day – at breakfast, lunch, and dinner\
teatime. A balanced meal will contain a bit of everything including a drink. An example is having ce-
real for breakfast, pasta for lunch, and salmon and rice for dinner.
Snacks – snacks are small amounts of food people typically eat in between meals to balance their
stomach if they are hungry. Snacks can be considered healthy or unhealthy. An example of a healthy
snack is an apple; an example of an unhealthy snack is a bar of chocolate. Snacks can be made from
processed foods or made fresh.
Nutrients – Nutrients are substances found in food; they provide nourishment to our bodies which
makes us function properly throughout the day. There are 6 types of nutrients – carbohydrates, fats,
proteins, vitamins, minerals, water.
Nutritional health
What is malnutrition?
Malnutrition is when the body is not receiving enough nutrients from the food the person may eat.
This can lead to the body not being able to function.
What is undernutrition?
Undernutrition Is when a person is not eating enough calories and because of that, they are not re-
ceiving enough nutrients for their body. Undernutrition may be because a person is unable to eat
