Question 1

Hearing and mindless listening, compared to listening and mindful listening are two

completely different topics. I believe that if you hear something that somebody says, and it

goes in one ear and out the other, you genuinely don’t care about what they’re saying to you.

The same goes with mindless listening, if you were just reacting in a routine way it will be

noticeable to the person that’s trying to talk to you, and they will feel as if you don’t care about

what they’re saying. I think that listening and mindful listening are very important nowadays

especially in a college setting for many reasons.

I think that people tell their friends things expecting them to listen, but they’re only

hearing what they’re saying. I can relate to this topic, because I communicated to a friend that I

was upset, and I don’t believe that she was actually listening to why, she was just hearing it and

responding routinely. It was very noticeable that she was responding routinely because she was

responding really fast, and I could tell that she wasn’t thinking about or processing what I was

saying and trying to help me. She was just responding so it seemed like she was listening when

she was not. This affected me because I thought that she did not care. This resulted in me being

more upset and having another reason to be upset.

This can also be more intense to other people. For example, if a person is suicidal, and

they are telling their friend about something that is upsetting them, and their friend is only

hearing what they’re saying and responding in a way that everyone responds, it can make the

depression worse. It can make it worse because the other person feels as if they have nobody
