I believe that Sternberg’s triangle of love accounts for all possibilities in a romantic relationship.I do you believe that consummate love it is the ultimate goal of a romantic experience because
it has intimacy, passion and commitment. I do believe that when someone is getting into a
relationship, they do chase consummate love. I also believe that before consummate love
people focus on fatuous love, companionate love, and romantic love. I believe that
consummate love is the end goal, but you need to have the other three before you can reach
that.
I do believe that romantic ideals change over the course of life. For example, I believe the
romantic ideals would change over the period of a relationship if you were experiencing empty
love, infatuation, and liking. Empty love is commitment alone, where it feels as if you were the
only one committed in the relationship. Infatuation means passion alone and the other person
isn’t passionate about you. Liking is intimacy alone, which means you feel like they cannot fulfill
your wants or needs. If you are experiencing any of these in a relationship, I do not believe that
you can reach consummate love because you don’t have the intimacy, passion, or commitment
that you need for consummate love.
Something I have learned that will make me more of a capable romantic partner in the future is
that communication is key. In the past I have experienced one-sided relationships, where I am
the only person trying. To avoid partnerships that don’t work for me I will communicate my
needs and wants of a relationship to them, and if they cannot fulfill them, I will not pursue
anything with them.
