‘’Call your Mom’’ by Noah Kahan is a warm hug to all of us who are struggling
Noah Kahan, most famous for his 2024 song ‘’Stick Season’’ has
been into music since he was a young boy. Making his debut about
7 years ago with his first single ‘’Young Blood’’. Growing up in
Stafford life didn’t always come easy to him. Which has a great
influence on his music. In his music he writes about all the high
and lows of his life. he does so by using very personal lyrics and a
country beat. One of the songs where he reflects back on the
darkest times he encountered is called ‘’Call Your mom’’ which is
written in the concept of speaking to a friend who’s trying to
commit suicide and kind-off feels like a warm hug to so many
people who are in the same situation. Noah Kahan tries to lessen Noah Kahan’s new album: ‘’Stick Season’’
the taboo about mental health, which is why in 2023 he founded
a non-profit mental health foundation called ‘’the busyhead
program’’1 to help those who need it most.
In the song ‘’Call Your Mom’’ he speaks to anyone who has struggled with suicidal thoughts.
With one of the first lyrics being ‘’don’t let this darkness fool you, all lights turned off can be
turned on.’’ Here he tries to cheer someone up by stating that however may depressed or
‘’dark’’ you feel there’s always a way out.
The title of the song: Call your Mom also brings tribute to this concept. The concept of
‘’calling you mom’’ can for some people with deep-rooted family issues be very triggering. By
saying ‘’I’ll call your mom anyways’’ he symbolises the thought that whenever someone is in
that much pain or struggle all issues should be laid aside. Which suggest that if someone
where to try and commit suicide all could be forgotten until someone finds the strength to
continue life.
If you have been in a suicidal state of mind you’ll be familiar with the feeling of nobody
understanding how you feel or feeling like what you are going through is nothing like anyone
else. Now if you are in that position a friend of family member might try to help with good
intentions without knowing what you might actually be going through. He describes this by
using the lyrics: ‘’Don’t be discouraged I’ve been exactly where you are’’ this way he let’s you
know that he understands and really tries to do the best he can.
He sums this all up in a powerful bridge that goes:
‘’Medicate, meditate, swear your soul to Jesus
Throw a punch, fall in love, give yourself a reason
Don't wanna drive another mile wonderin' if you're breathin'
So, won't you stay, won't you stay, won't you stay with me?’’
In this bridge he leaves a powerful message that no matter what your feeling or what is going
on in your life, just find one reason to stay.
