Question:
How to discontinue phentermine and/or topiramate
Answer:
If a patient who is taking phentermine and topiramate has not lost 5% of
weight loss by six months, the drugs should be discontinued by tapering off
medication.
Question:
· Topiramate
Therapeutic effect
Answer:
induces sense of satiety
, Question:
· Orlistat
Patient education needed
Answer:
Approximately 20% to 30% of patients experience oily rectal leakage,
flatulence with discharge, fecal urgency, and fatty or oily stools. Another 10%
experience increased defecation and fecal incontinence. All of these are the
result of reduced fat absorption, and all can be minimized by reducing fat
intake. Dosing with psyllium (Metamucil and others), a bulk-forming
laxative, can greatly reduce GI effects. The underlying mechanism is
adsorption of dietary fat by psyllium.
By reducing fat absorption, orlistat can reduce absorption of fat-soluble
vitamins (vitamins A, D, E, and K). Vitamin K deficiency can intensify the
effects of warfarin, an anticoagulant. In patients taking warfarin,
anticoagulant effects should be monitored closely. To avoid deficiency,
patients should take a daily multivitamin supplement. Administration should
be done 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking orlistat.
Question:
Which weight loss drug(s) are associated with a suicide risk in children,
adolescents, and young adults?
Answer:
Naltrexone and Bupropion (Contrave)
