one origin and destination (large gateways and inland centers)
- Trains with different carloads service various customers, origins and
destinations (= more costly and time-consuming)
- Containerization impacted rail transportation and supported the
development of intermodal rail services

Maritime - The principle of economies of scale developed specialized ships to carry:
o Break-bulk
