Promoting public health
Assignment 2
Introduction
Health promoters work to improve the health of both individuals and
populations. These promoters consist of global organisations such as the
WHO, national and local governments, health authorities, and specialised
departments that research specific health issues. Their shared objective is to
enhance public health and reduce health inequalities. Governments are
particularly focused on advancing the health of their populations and fixing
the gap in health disparities.

Global health promoters:
 The main goal of the World Health Organization (WHO) is to oversee
international health initiatives within the United Nations framework. It
guides health systems and advocates for healthy lifestyles worldwide
by partnering with policymakers and health organisations to help
countries improve their healthcare systems. The WHO gathers data
from nations dealing with health crises to better understand how to
control these diseases both locally and globally. Additionally, it offers
support to the affected areas in managing and treating the illnesses.
 Child Family Health International (CFHI) is a non-governmental
organisation dedicated to global health education programs. It
educates families in low and middle-income countries around the
world, offering support to local communities in ten countries across
South America, Asia, and Africa. By working with local health
professionals, CFHI volunteers implement programs that focus on
health and safety, paediatrics, nursing, and community clinic care,
addressing a variety of local and national health issues.
 Save the Children is a charity dedicated to supporting children's health
globally. It works within local communities to improve living conditions
for children, aiming to ensure every child survives into adulthood. The
organisation focuses on protecting children from harm and educating
them about healthy living.

National, regional and local health promoters:
 The Department of Health (DH) oversees health and wellbeing in
England and Wales, taking charge of formulating policies to address
various health challenges faced by the population, both short-term and

, long-term. It handles the funding and delivery of health services and is
accountable to parliament for the nation's health. The DH collaborates
with 28 agencies and public bodies, such as Public Health England, the
Health and Social Care Information Centre, and Health Education
England, which provide specialised research data upon request and
report directly to the DH.
 NHS Wales delivers healthcare services to approximately 3 million
individuals and oversees service provision, policy development, and
funding for present and future care in Wales. It was formed in 2009
when the Welsh Assembly decided that NHS services should provide
care at a more local level. NHS Wales is accountable to the Welsh
government, it has seven Local Health Boards, each responsible for its
own area and three national NHS Trusts.

Local clinical commissioning groups, CCGs, play a significant role in
community health. Because CCGs are local groups containing all the local GP
groups, GPs and other medical professionals have a say in commissioning
decisions. The CCGs report to NHS England and are responsible for: hospital
care, rehabilitive care, most community health services, mental health and
learning disability services and urgent, emergency and out of hours care.

The campaign that I have chosen is the change4life health campaign. It is a
campaign launched in 2009 by Public Health England that encourages people
in the UK to make healthier choices. In 2021, it was then brought under the
Better Health brand. It offers tips, resources, and support to help individuals
and families eat well, exercise more, and live healthier lives. Its goal has
been to create a social movement that will enable the government, the NHS,
local government agencies, companies, charities, schools, families, and
community leaders to all contribute to enhancing the diets and levels of
physical activity of children. Health problems may occur due to a lack of
exercise and a poor diet including obesity, high blood pressure and heart
diseases. Change for Life uses a variety of tactics, including app
development, to increase public awareness about the effects of unhealthy
eating. Users can use the app to scan barcodes on food and drink products
to determine their content of sugar, salt, and saturated fat. The app
encourages parents to be experimental with meal plans and to oversee their

,children's meals by providing ideas and advice on healthy eating and family-
friendly activities.

P5: Explain how approaches to health promotion and protection
have been applied in a selected health promotion campaign
Why is it important to monitor the health of the population?
Recognising patterns in health and disease is crucial. Living a longer life can
be achieved by practicing good health management. Health monitoring is
essential for prevention, particularly since early detection can lower suffering
and medical expenses. Patient outcomes can be considerably enhanced by
many diseases when they are detected and treated early. Important health
information can be found, among other places, from the World Health
Organisation. The European Union receives data from the Department of
Health, a specialised UN agency, to provide a thorough assessment of
population health and the required assistance. Keeping an eye on public
health is essential to keeping the country healthy. Effective allocation of
resources is possible for local, regional, and national authorities by
monitoring disease outbreaks and the incidence of serious illnesses. Public
Health England utilises information and data collected nationwide to
generate insightful health intelligence reports. These reports cover trends,
specific diseases and disorders, the management of health inequalities, and
the impact of healthcare interventions. This valuable information allows
healthcare practitioners, policymakers, and commissioners to make informed
decisions regarding the implementation of care.

Identifying those most at risk:

Health prevention services are directed towards children with the goal of
preventing future harmful behaviours and creating healthy lifestyle habits at
a young age. Twenty percent of children are obese today, despite a decrease
in youth drinking, smoking, and teenage pregnancies, according to the
CYPHOF. Studies indicate that variables affecting children from the moment
of conception may have long-term effects on their health, such as problems
with attachment, obesity, heart disease, mental health, academic success,
and socioeconomic standing. Health education is offered in schools on

, subjects including good nutrition, the dangers of long-term smoking, using
illegal drugs, and sexual health.

The clear reason for the global rise in obesity is that people are eating more
high-calorie, high-fat meals and engaging in less physical activity. Foods that
have undergone extensive processing, like those that contain added sugar,
salt, or artificial substances are usually less costly, easier to transport, and
last longer than freshly prepared meals. Consequently, these dinners are
starting to replace conventional whole-food diets, even in regions where
shortages of food used to be an issue.

The ONS's data provides obvious and defining information about the
connection between unemployment, mental
illness's damaging symptoms, and poor
health. An unemployed person is more likely
to experience feelings of worthlessness,
which can lead to depression and therefore
develop unhealthy habits. Their lack of resources and mental health may
prevent them from eating well or exercising, which could cause them to gain
weight and pass away too soon. According to additional ONS data, people
without jobs are more likely to suffer from chronic illnesses, have worse
mental health, and feel more psychologically distressed.

As the population of older people in Britain grows significantly, it is crucial for
health services to understand their specific health needs. Many elderly
individuals remain active, which helps them maintain good health and a high
quality of life. However, those who are less physically active, often due to
economic circumstances or physical impairments, develop distinct health
needs. Health and welfare promotion for the elderly varies by region and is
often funded by charities or local councils. Not all elderly people have access
to resources such as:
