Lab 2 – Measurement of Mass, Length, and Time

Purpose: The purpose of lab 2 is to be able to use a triple beam balance, digital caliper, and
meter stick to take the measurements of the mass, length, and time.

Introduction: During lab 2 we will be using three different types of instruments to find the
measurements of three objects. When we measure the three objects each object will be
measured by either a triple beam balance, or digital caliper, or meter stick. After we take the
measurements, we will then provide a data table for the calculations found. Once all the values
are put in the data table, we will then be able to find the average value, which is also called the
mean. By finding the mean we will then be able to find the standard deviation. Lastly, by finding
all of these calculations we will then be able to analyze what we learned and apply it to real-life
applications.

Reflection:
1. We made the choice that the long meter stick was best for using the length and width
measurements. We chose this because both standard deviations for length and width, of
the long meter stick, were the lowest values, which had more precision and less room
for error. The reason why the long meterstick has the lowest value, and why it’s the best
for using, is because since it’s longer than the short meterstick, and can cover the table
in one measurement. The short metersticks standard deviation for length was
0.010791862 m and the width was 0.007915 m. the long metersticks standard deviation
for length was 0.001126 m and the width was 0.004626 m. Since they aren’t the same,
we improve precision by accumulation. We use this because the more we measure
something the precise our answer will become.
2. The standard deviation for length of the plastic object was 0.000537416 m, the standard
deviation of the width was 0.000339639 m, and the standard deviation of the thickness
was 2.9E-05 m. we tend to lose precision when we take multiple measurements. We
want to take multiple measures of a quantity any time we can, so we can make our
answer the most precise.
3. The two cylinders are made from different materials. We found the white metal to be
Aluminon, and we found the golden metal to copper.

Application:
1. We can make sense of this because we don’t take this sentence literally. When know by
using conversion factors to know that he means dollars per gallon of gas.

3. Out of the measurements of g1 and g2, the measurement of g1 is the “better”
measurement. The reason why g1 is the better measurement is because it’s the most
precise. The value of g1 is more precise because the standard deviation is less than the
