Lab 3 – Vectors

Purpose: The purpose of lab 3 is to be able to break apart vectors and recombine combine the
components to make them into resultant vectors, so we can confirm the systems
mathematically that are already used and to predict how to make them equilibrium.

Introduction: During lab 3 we will be using a force table, pulleys, mass hanger pans, washer with
threads, and a set of slotted masses. We are using these tools to help break apart vectors and
then recombine the components to make them into resultant vectors. These tools will also be
used in the lab to confirm the systems mathematically to find forces in 1-D, equal forces in 2-D,
and unequal forces in 2-D. Each of these findings will have a data table. The calculations in the
data table will then help us to be able to coordinate transformation and be able to make a
prediction on how to make these forces equilibrium.

Reflection:
1. Yes, the forces involved in balancing the washer in the center were equal. We did not
have to use a correction mass.
2. When we moved the washer off center, the washer moved more towards the left side at
0 degrees. Even though it stayed in place but was not centered, the two forces are
unbalanced.
3. Yes, we were able to balance the system without using a “correction mass”. The final
location of F3 matched our predicted very well, because our predicated and final
location were the same.
4. Yes, this arrangement balanced without having to use a “correction mass” in the location
that we expected.
5. No, the resultant vectors do not depend on the absolute coordinates, therefore the
situation is non fundamentally different. Changing the coordinates does not have an
effect on the relative difference in the angel between F1, F2, and F3. However, changing
the weight, which changes the force, has an effect on the relative difference in the
angels.

Application:
1. We can’t break a vector into “components” that are 60 degrees apart because, we need
them to be at 90 degrees so we can break the components into 2-D. breaking the
components into 2-D allows us to use the trig functions to get the angels. Therefore, we
can’t break a vector into “components” that are 60 degrees, because we wouldn’t be
able to make it into a right triangle and use trig functions to find the angels.
2. You would need to push 81.47 degrees to the right with a force of 20.22 lbs. to get it to
move forward.
3. The minimum force the vehicle must supply is 50,600 N and the angle between the
motion of the vehicle and Reggies is 102 degrees.
