Community and Environment Assessment Findings
Social Determinants of Health

Community Resources for Abused and Battered Women and Human Trafficking:
-The Shelter for Abused Women & Children, Naples, FL:
-The National Domestic Violence Hotline: ...
The community and environment assessment of Naples, FL, revealed several key trends. Naples
is a suburban community with affluent neighborhoods, pristine beaches, and a vibrant cultural
scene. The population is diverse, with a significant number of older adults and a noticeable
presence of people exercising and participating in outdoor activities. However, there are also
pockets of homelessness and individuals with hygiene issues, indicating socio-economic
disparities. These findings are closely related to my practicum topic, which focuses on health
promotion among vulnerable populations, notably human trafficking victims. Understanding the
community's socio-economic dynamics and health behaviors helps in tailoring interventions to
address these disparities effectively (Chisolm-Straker & Stoklosa, 2017).
Social Determinants of Health
The assessment highlighted significant social determinants of health (SDOH) within Naples.
Two strengths observed were the availability of health resources such as hospitals, clinics, and
pharmacies, and the presence of recreational facilities promoting physical activity (Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2021). These resources support overall community
health and wellness. However, two areas for improvement include addressing homelessness and
improving public transportation (Marmot & Allen, 2020). Enhancing support services for the
homeless and expanding public transit options would improve access to care and mobility,
contributing to better health outcomes for all community members, including human trafficking
victims, who often face barriers to accessing healthcare (Lederer & Wetzel, 2018).
Educational Material and Community Relevance
Based on the assessment findings, I selected educational material focused on health promotion
for vulnerable populations, specifically targeting human trafficking victims and those with
limited access to healthcare. This material is appropriate for the Naples community as it
addresses identified gaps in social services and healthcare access. By providing licensed
healthcare professionals and community members with strategies to improve health literacy and
promote preventive care, this resource will help bridge the gap between available health services
and those in need (Stoklosa et al., 2020). It will empower healthcare providers to recognize signs
