Class Principles to Neuroscience and Pharmacology

LO:

Be able to describe the contributions of the different brain regions to overall
nervous system function

Be able to describe some of the major diseases occurring in the different brain
regions

Be able to list the different drugs used to treat such brain disorders and
explain their mechanisms of action.

Gross Organization of the Mammalian Nervous System

Nervous system consists of 2 divisions

CNS- Central

PNS- Peripheral

The Human Brain

3lbs of tissue for emotion processing and other functions

Structure of the Nervous System: Functional Anatomy (Cerebral Cortex) 1

, The functions happen within 100 billion neurons and 10 trillion neuroglia

We have the biggest brain and supposedly correlates to intelligence. Both
the cerebral cortex and the frontal lobes experience expansion which
carries out functions including self control, planning and thoughts

Cerebral Cortex

Receives sensory info

Messages are sent for skeletal muscle movement

Integration of incoming and outgoing nerve impulses

Performs activities like thinking, learning and remembering

Basal Ganglia

Assists co-ordination of slow, sustained movements

Suppresses useless patterns of movement

Thalamus

Relays most sensory info from spinal cord and parts of the brain to
cerebral cortex

Interprets some sensory messages including pain, temp and pressure

Hypothalamus

Controls different homeostatic functions like body temp and respiration

Directs hormone secretion of pituitary

Cerebellum

Coordination of subconscious movements
