Cultural Impact on Human Behavior

CNL-509-0500: Counseling the Culturally Diverse

Catherine Troop

, 2

Every individual, community, and state have a tremendous impact on culture. The society

in which we were raised and the environment in which we interact have an impact on the things

we do every day. According to research, people's reactions to a given incident are influenced by

the society in which they live.

The short film "Love Is All You Need?" effectively highlights the impact of cultural

differences on personality formation, psychological difficulties, and help-seeking behaviors,

primarily focusing on the LGBTQIA+ community. It becomes evident that perspective and

empathy are essential in a counselor's approach when addressing these issues.

The film's main character was a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, yet his parents

were Christians. The main character's parents enforce hard standards and have a "black-and-

white" outlook, which results in a lack of understanding and compassion for the protagonist's

issues, which produces psychological problems for the protagonist. Because his parents do not

accept him for who he is, he struggles with feelings of remorse, shame, and dread. He is cautious

about seeking help from his family and peers, and his aid-seeking behavior is impacted by his

cultural background. Instead, he seeks help and knowledge online through a variety of places.

This cultural difference has a substantial impact on people's willingness to seek help (Cronk,

2019).

The film depicts a societal background in which heterosexuality is considered the norm,

and those who identify as LGBTQIA+ endure discrimination, prejudice, and bias. This

discrimination from society influences LGBTQIA+ people's personalities, requiring many of

them to suppress their true identities. Resulting in internal conflicts and psychological suffering.
