Unit 23 Using Information & Preparing for Work Assignment 2

As part of my apprenticeship, I have been asked to weld together a section of mild steel plate
that will form part of the undercarriage of a trailer. Taking into account my basic welding
training, I will select a method in which I would use to complete this job. I will use the
information sources to help me decide; likewise, in my report, I will suggest suitable
parameters for the welding method that I have chosen.

Fundamentally, welding is a fabrication process to make high strength joint between two or
more parts by heating to their melting temperature, with/without the application of pressure &
with/without the use of filler metal, which has a melting point of almost equivalent to the base
metal.

There are many different types of welding processes, which are known as:
- Shielded Metal Arc Welding: This type of welding is a
process that uses coated replaceable electrode to lie on the
weld. Likewise, as the electrode melts, the flux coating
degenerates, handing out shielding gases that defend the
weld area from atmospheric gases & delivers molten slag
(waste) that covers the filler metal as it journeys from the
electrode to the weld pool.
- Gas Metal Arc Welding: A process in which
a constant & consumable wire electrode &
shielding gas are served through a welding
gun.

- Gas Welding: This method mainly focuses on high temperature
flames that are produced by gas combustion, which is used to melt
the work pieces together.

- Resistance Welding: In this method, this welding involves heat that
passes a very high current that is between 1000A - 100,000A, which’ll pass through a
resistance caused by the friction between 2 or more metal surfaces where it causes
pools of molten metal to be created.

Additionally, the welding method I have chosen is Arc
Welding, which consists of numerous bonding
procedures for joining metals, by applying extreme
heat, the metal at the joint between two parts is smelted
& caused to merge, usually directly or with a
transitional molten filler metal. After cooling &
solidification, a bond is created since the joining is a
mixture of metals; the final assembly has the same
strength properties as the metal parts. This is in essentially in contrast to non-fusion
processes of linking in which the mechanical & physical properties of the base materials
can’t be replicated at the joint.

The reasons why I chose arc welding is due to the fact there are a variety pf advantages of
arc welding compared to other methods as this type of welding can function on dirty
metal; the cost is very reasonable as the equipment is well priced & inexpensive, & there
is less equipment needed since there is a lack of gas as its offspring. Likewise, the
portability is very simple due to the fact that the materials can be effortlessly transported
to a new location when required.

There are many different types of welding joints, such
as butt joint, corner & tee joints, edge joint & many
more. But the joint I will be using is the lap joint, which
is one of the toughest types of joints currently existing.
Fundamentally, this joint is created by lapping one
piece of metal over another, & for determined joint
efficiency, the overlay should be at the minimum, 3x
the width of the slimmest member of the joint.
