Definitie
Frozen shoulder kenmerkt zich in de beginfase door pijn in de
schouder, uitstralend in de bovenarm en geleidelijk verlies aan
actieve en passieve bewegingsvrijheid, wat voortkomt uit een
diffuse ontsteking van de synoviale membraan en een
progressieve fibrosering die binnen de 1 tot 9 maanden leidt tot
een contractuur van het totale glenohumerale gewrichtskapsel.

1) Ontstekings- of inflammatiefase
Pijn in deltoideusregio
Nachtelijke pijn
Toenemende beperking ROM (onder anaesthesie bijna normale ROM)
Myofibroblastenactiviteit neemt toe
Hypertrofische vasculaire synovitis
Duur: gemiddeld 3 maanden
2) Pijn- of freezingfase
Pijn blijft gelijk of neemt toe
Afnemende ROM
Gewrichtskapsel begint te verkleven
Duur: gemiddeld 3-9 maanden
3) Stijfheids- of frozen fase
Schouder is relatief pijnvrij
Forse afname van de ROM door verklevingen kapsel
Duur: gemiddeld 9-15 maanden
4) Chronische of thawing fase
Minimale pijn
Langzaam herstel van de ROM
