P2- Identify the role of the team leader in the public services
Leaders in the uniformed services have many positions and these are usually termed as ranks. A
leader cannot be a leader without followers which is why they have to do there job well enough to
succeed and have people wanting to follow you. Followers are the people who make up the team.
Leaders have a team to help them achieve their tasks and without them one must question whether
you are a leader at all. Examples of leaders include: Commanding officers, Commissioned Officers,
Non Commissioned Officers.
Responsibilities
Leaders in the uniformed services have a variety of responsibilities. The main responsibility of a team
leader however, is to ensure the task is completed. Completion of the task depends heavily upon the
leader’s ability to ensure that the correct environment is developed to help the team get their work
done. For example, the team may need to work with multi agencies to achieve a task, let’s say
helping to provide a safe environment in the case of a major disaster. The leader would be
responsible for ensuring that the person in charge coordinates activities with other agencies and
provide the team members with the correct resources to do the job. It would also be the
responsibility of the leader to inform the team of the situation and direct them to consider the
options available to them.
Team leaders may not be as high in rank as a commanding officer, they may be lower down the
hierarchical structure, but still remain leaders as they have the authority over others to get the job
done. Being a good team leader is matter of balance. It is about keeping the team focused on the
task at hand and at the same time allowing them to make their own decisions.
Roles of team leader:
Decision maker
Different leadership styles can be used when leading, but even if leader uses democratic approach,
the last decision will be from the leader. This role is very important, because the leader takes all
responsibility for the decision. That is why only people with a certain skill set and a reasonable
amount of experience become team leaders.Sometimes and specifically in the uniformed public
services, decisions the leader makes are very important, because someone’s life can be at risk.
In Armed forces, squad leaders make important decisions while fighting in a battle. They rely and
base their decisions on a lot of factors, plans and strategies. They need to decide and tell the squad
when to fire shots, attack enemy base or perform any other function. If decisions like that are
calculated incorrectly, someone from your team or public can be put danger.
