1-Verneukkind:
Karakters:
• Jessica
• Kyle
• Ouma kytie
Jessica[Engels]:
• She stays with Ouma Kytie.
• She longs for her mother.
• She can be seen as superstitious because she considers all small changes in her day
to be a sign that her mother is going to come back.
• The most important sign, that she is waiting for is, the seven bolts of lightening, which
Ouma Kytie promised that if that would happen, her mother will return.
• She says Kyle doesn’t understand what it means to long for a mother because he has
one. He tells her why does she believe in good things, as she is a big girl already.

Ouma Kytie[Engels]:
• She is a very ‘ugly’ person or bad hearted.
• She can be seen as a person doesn’t look at the good of a person. She always
compares Jessica to her mother is a ‘naughty or troublemaker’. She doesn’t actually
look at the good Jessica does for her.
• She tells Jessica that is the seven bolts of thunder will come, her mother will return.
She does this because it is highly unlikely to happen in the Cape. She only does this to
make Jessica stop asking her questions about her mother.
• She teaches Jessica the con in begging. How to hook the victim. This can be seen, that
the grandmother is a bad in uence to the grandchild because she is teaching her to
cheat and wrong people.

Jessica[Afrikaans]:
• Sy bly by Ouma Kytie.
Hy vertel
haar hoekom glo sy in goeie dinge, want sy is al 'n groot meisie.

Ouma Kytie[Afrikaans]:

Sy sê Jessica se ma was “lastig”
gou verby.

Vrae[Engels]
- Name three reasons why Jessica is happy where she lives.
-She wants her mother.
-She has to beg after school in the afternoons.
-She has to sleep on a mattress bed.
-Her Grandma Kytie is not the pretty person. She is a di cult, impatient woman.
- Why is Jessica in a hurry to get home at the beginning of the story?
She thinks the gray clouds bring the possibility that her mother is going home today
and then she wants to be there.
- How does Jessica feel about the presence of the clouds? Explain.
Excited. She hopes the gray clouds bring a thunderstorm, because her grandmother
promised her that her mother would come home the day the thunder hit seven
times./ She felt as if it was a blanket for her and she felt excited.
- Why can Jessica be described as superstitious?
She believes her mother will come home the day the thunder hits seven times. She
deduces from good things that are coming her way and believes it may be a sign
that her mother is coming home.
- Why doesn't Jessica bother Kyle?
Kyle has a mother, he doesn't know what it feels like to crave.
- How do you know Grandma Kytie also did not have patience with Jessica's
mother?
She says Jessica's mother was "troublesome".
- Write down a quote that indicates Jessica doesn't think the promise of seven
thunders will come true easily.
“… Everyone knows it doesn't thunder easily in the Cape. And if it gets heavy, it's
soon over. “
- How does Jessica's future dream di er from her current circumstances?
With her grandmother, Jessica sleeps on a mattress bed and has to beg for school
in the afternoons. She dreams of her mother coming home and taking her away to a
"green house". There will be enough money that she no longer has to beg.
- Name three pieces of evidence that Jessica, even when she begs, is constantly thinking
about her mother.
As she chooses women to beg, she also chooses a new mother.
When she begs someone who ignores her and just walks away, it reminds her of her mother
who left at the time. When one of the women she begs puts their hand around her shoulder,
she imagines it's her mother's hand.
- The second last paragraph refers to the title of the story again. Explain the dual meaning
that can be attached to the title.
The title "Cheating Child" is ambiguous. This could refer to Jessica possibly being an
illegitimate child or to how she is cheating on the people she is begging for by asking for
bread rst and once they agree, she persuades them to buy what she really wants. She is
cheated by life and her circumstances to lead a life she does not want.

- Evaluate whether there are ethical lessons the reader can learn from Jessica. Motivate
your judgment.
There are de nitely lessons to be learned from Jessica's situation to never lose hope that
you can escape from an unfortunate situation or improve your circumstances
