● the rationale behind the structure of the course, e.g. why is it in this order?
● how the course will meet the learner’s needs
Why you have chosen this syllabus type:
I have chosen to combine the Skills - based and Topic based syllabus to ensure that all the
students needs are met.
The skill based syllabus allows for the student to focus on the main skills and abilities that
a student needs namely reading, writing, listening and speaking. For this syllabus the
focus will be on listening and speaking, as the student already feels confident with writing
English and reading English does not feature on the needs analysis. The activities will
focus on improving skills that are necessary in the workplace, such as going for a job
interview and the correct pronunciation of words used in the workplace.
The Topic based syllabus allows the student to focus on activities of interest and forms a
basis for vocabulary, functions and skills practice. This syllabus type will allow the student
to feel more motivated as he is learning about things that he has significant interest in. In
this particular lesson the student will focus on activities of interest such as listening to an
authentic piece covering current affairs and having a casual conversation about films and
the environment. The student will also become more confident with his English fluency
which will contribute to his job prospects and socialising with English friends.
Why have you chosen the topics covered:
I chose the topics based on the questionnaire and learner analysis. Alberto has a career in
industrial engineering and this provided a good basis for the topics covered. The topics
covered in the lesson include small-talk, current affairs/science, music and film, work and
the environment, these are all associated with the students' topics of interest. The topics
covered provide a wide range of vocabulary that needs to be used, which will assist in
achieving the students English Language learning goals. The topic that includes job
