IBD zijn chronische ontstekingsziekten van de darm. Er is hier geen trigger voor te vinden.
Hier vallen twee ziektebeelden onder: ziekte van Crohn en collitis ulcerosa.
Bij 10% van de patiënten weten we niet of ze ziekte van Crohn hebben of collitis ulcerosa, zij krijgen
dan alleen die diagnose IBD.
Roken is een risicofactor voor ziekte van Crohn, maar niet bewezen voor collitis ulcerosa.
