A. Discuss how to positively affect the health and behavioral health outcomes of thecommunity described in the scenario by applying two sociopolitical drivers at each of the
following levels:
• micro
The micro-level is focused on individuals, and aims to help those patients in their care. One
important aspect of healthcare in these underserved communities is education and health
literacy, particularly the lack of both. I would implement patient care coordinators to work
with each patient individually and walk through their care as it pertains to them. They
would go over navigating through their appointments, assist with medication explanations,
and help them understand the full picture of their situation.
Cultural differences at this level can make navigating and receiving healthcare difficult for
certain populations. I would ensure that we had culturally diverse materials, including
readily available interpreters and literature in languages other than English. Additionally, I
would ensure that we have a diverse workforce representing our community so the patients
can feel as though they have someone who can understand them.
• mezzo
The mezzo-level is essentially the middle level, where the focus is on more than just the
individual but not quite the majority of the population. It is focused on smaller groups and
communities. One of the major disparities in this community is wealth. There is a stark
difference in this community, where major poverty exists with areas of extreme wealth and
affluence. The impoverished community does not get the same healthcare opportunities
and their life expectancy is much lower. I would ensure that there were resources available
to them for which they do not need to be wealthy. I would create food banks and
community fridges where others in the neighborhood can donate food to the community
fridge for those less fortunate to take from. I would hold free clinics in the community so
those that are uninsured or underinsured still have access to healthcare.
An area of concern in this community is the high prevalence of drug usage. Implementing
services that will allow these people to get the help they need in a way that they can trust. I
would create support groups that those looking to get clean, or thinking about it, can join
and share their stories with those around them. Similar to Narcotics Anonymous, but
before they are sober. However, those leading the group would be those from the
neighborhood who have overcome their addiction and have turned their life around. The
idea would be that they can get help when they want it, and there is no obligation or
pressure to do anything.
, • macro
The macro-level involves very large groups, such as entire societies or populations. One
way to influence change on a macro level would be to advocate for policy reform regarding
access to healthcare. There are large disparities on the type of healthcare that people in
the same society receive. Working with local government officials to help pass laws
allowing anyone to access the necessary healthcare they need, regardless of culture, race,
wealth, or any other factors. Free healthcare would be a great step in the direction of
equality.
Additionally, I would enlist the media to assist in spreading the word on these issues and
disparities in this community. I’m sure there are many people who have no idea that this is
going on in their own neighborhoods, and by using the media to appeal to the population
we could make a change.
B. Discuss how to develop strategic partnerships between the organization (i.e., the
hospital) and the community in the scenario by doing the following:
1. Identify two new and innovative community relationships, one with a strategic partner
and one with an organizational stakeholder, that could benefit the organization and
community from the scenario.
A great strategic partner would be a larger health system, particularly one affiliated with a
University. A great organizational stakeholder to partner with would be a community health
center.
a. Describe how the relationships identified in part B1 can be applied to the scenario to
advance the needs of the organization and community.
A university affiliated health system will have a lot more resources than a community
hospital in an urban area. They provide a wealth of knowledge and can help improve the
healthcare provided to the community. Additionally, this would allow the community
hospital to have a bigger reach and potentially secure more funding.
A community health center is somewhere for those who cannot afford typical healthcare or
are uninsured. In this community, the residents have a large disparity of health issues
stemming from their levels of wealth. Additionally, the health center could employ staff
that reflect the community that they are in, in regards to race, or culture. This would help
regain the community's trust by having someone who can understand them.
