Unit 20 assignment 2
Report that compares, at least 3 different types of radio communication, including:
• The name of each radio communication.
• What each radio communication is used for in the UPS.
• Why each radio communication type is better used than others.
Clansman
Its a combat net radio system that had a considerable advance over existing radios being offered to
the armed forces at the time. This radio system allowed the introduction of single sideband and
narrowband frequency modulation to forward area combat net radio for the first time.
Advantages:
Was lighter than the current radio systems
more flexible
It has a great communication range
Can be used in all weather conditions
Disadvantages:
It has limited data capacity
A 2.5m antenna, could be seen by the enemy
It is hard to repair as the parts needed are no longer being made
Bowman
The Bowman is used in the British armed forces. The bowman overtook the clansman radios
through its security, data capabilities, reliability and resilience against electronic warfare (EW)
attack. Bowman has been released incrementally as a number of phased capability releases, known
as BCIP releases
Advantages:
It is digitally encrypted
It has cross boarder Internet access
It can unite all the armed forces
Disadvantages:
It is very heavy for soldiers to carry
Lack of capacity can make sending messages slow
Very expensive to make
Airwave
The Airwave radio is used in the police force. It was first introduced in 2002 and by 2005 a few
people within the police force were using this type of radio. By 2009 everyone was. The old radio
used by the police was replaced by the airwave because it would not work underground because the
frequency it also would not work in areas where there was lead roofs. This put officers at risk.
