UNIT 76
MOVE AND POSITION
INDIVIDUALS IN
ACCORDANCE WITH
THEIR PLAN OF CARE
1.) Understand anatomy and physiology in relation to moving and
positioning individuals.
1.1 - Outline the anatomy and physiology of the human body in relation to
the importance of correct moving and positioning of individuals.
Human physiology focusses on how the body works. This includes muscles,
tissues, organs, the body as a whole. The main function of a muscle is to aid
in movement to the individual, muscles aid in movement by contracting.
Human anatomy focusses on the actual structure of the human body.
Moving an individual safely helps to prevent damage and injuries to both
parties.
Incorrectly moving an individual can cause, breaks, sprains, pulled muscles
and skin tears. An example of this potentially happening can be swift or
sudden movements or even dragging an individual a certain way.
You must also be careful about how much pressure you apply when
repositioning someone as too much pressure can cause bruising, tissue
damage and even bones to break.
1.2 - Describe the impact of specific conditions on the correct movement
and positioning of an individual.
Blindness – An individual who is blind will be unable to see what we are
doing as carers and so we must explain what we are doing, no matter how
small a movement we are aiming for, this will provide comfort and
understanding to the individual on what our intentions are during the
movement.
Deafness – An individual who is deaf may need to be spoken to louder or
have it written down so they may understand what movement we are
aiming for.
Dementia - An individual with dementia would need to be moved slower
than usual with explaining before any movement, this is due to dementia
patients getting confused and frustrated easily.
Arthritis - An individual with arthritis is likely to be suffering from joint pain.
It is important to follow the movement and handling procedures for the
individual which is in their care plan. Incorrect movement to the individual
