Leading through Change: The Role of Family Nurse Practitioners
A family nurse practitioner (FNP) plays an important role in adapting to and leading
healthcare change in today's rapidly changing healthcare environment. As advanced practice
registered nurses, FNPs are well-positioned to provide comprehensive and patient-centered care
to individuals and families across the lifespan (American Association of Nurse Practitioners,
2019). In today's ever-evolving healthcare environment, family nurse practitioners must be able
to adapt and lead their teams through changes in policies, procedures, and technologies. In
leading through change effectively, family nurse practitioners can help ensure that their patients
receive high-quality care and that their teams are able to work together effectively.
Vision and goals of family nurse practitioners in relation to emerging healthcare needs.
The role of family nurse practitioners in providing primary care and promoting health in
communities continues to grow. Future goals for a family nurse practitioner might include
providing more comprehensive care, including managing chronic conditions and prescribing
medications. In addition, they may use technology, such as telehealth and electronic health
records, to improve access to care and improve communication with patients. Furthermore,
family nurse practitioners are well-versed in emerging healthcare trends and needs, such as
preventive care, patient-centered care, and collaboration between professionals (Booth et al.,
2021). These trends can be incorporated into their practices by working with other healthcare
professionals to provide coordinated and integrated care, as well as by advocating for policies
and practices that support patient-centered care.
