Several differences exist between advanced nursing practice (ANP) and advanced
practice nursing (APN). These terms are separate yet interconnected in nursing, causing
confusion in the nursing community. Throughout this essay, we will examine the differences
between these two concepts and some other issues related to this concept including the
population they serve, certification opportunities, licensing, accreditation, certification,
education, and what it means to practice as a nurse practitioner in the state of Florida.
Differences between Advanced Nursing Practice and Advanced Practice Registered
Nursing:
1. Definition and Scope
Advanced nursing practice involves additional education and training, encompassing
various nursing specialties. A nurse who is an advanced practice nurse can provide primary care
services, such as diagnosing and treating common illnesses, ordering diagnostic tests, and
prescribing medication. The advanced practice registered nursing field, on the other hand,
includes nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, certified nurse midwives, and certified
nurse anesthetists. In addition to specialized knowledge and skills, APRNs provide higher quality
care than traditional nurses. In addition to providing services not typically provided by traditional
nurses, they can interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe medications, and perform minor surgeries.
2. Educational Requirements
Most advanced nursing practice roles require a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree. In contrast, the majority of APRN roles require the
completion of a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).
