A) Presenting 3 of your selected vocabulary items which would need to be concept checked,
Show how you would elicit, explain and concept check each of the three items.
1) Diplomat
I will first explain the meaning to the students : Diplomat - an official whose job is to represent one
country in another, and who usually works in an embassy.
I will then explain the word in context: A diplomat is a person appointed by a state or an
intergovernamental institution such as the United Nations or the European Union to conduct diplomacy
with one or more other States or international organizations.
I will then explain the form and pronunciation of the word: Diplomat is a noun. (The Tefl Academy Unit 4)
and the pronunciation is /ˈdɪp·ləˌmæt/ The stress is on the first of the 3 syllables Ooo.
I will then explain to them that there are some other things to keep in mind: A diplomat is a person who is
skilled at dealing with difficult situations in a way that does not offend people.
To check student understanding, I will ask them the following concept questions (The Tefl Academy, Unit 2)
that they need to answer with a YES/NO:
1) Is a person who is good at dealing with people in a way that avoids bad feelings? Yes
2) One employed or skilled in diplomacy? Yes
3) A person whose work is keeping good relations between the governments of different countries?
Yes
I will then explain: The main functions of diplomats are: representation and protection of the interests and
nationals of the sending State; initiation and facilitation of strategic agreements; treaties and conventions;
promotion of information; trade and commerce; technology; and friendly relations
I will then use the technique elicitating (The Tefl Academy, Unit 2) after I explained the above and ask the
class to give me another word for diplomat in this context: The answer should be Ambassador.
I will then tell the class to write down the new word in their vocabulary book so that they dont forget the
word.
2) Community
I will first use the technique of elicitating and tell the students: There is a community of interest that
gathers at Stonehenge, England, for the summer solstice.
I will then explain the meaning of Community: the people who live in a particular area, or a group of people
who are considered as a unit because of their shared interests or background.
