NSG 4432 BSN Exam 1 Study Guide

Key Topics and Concepts

 Growth and Development

 Infant Development – Notes from exam review below.

o Normal weight gain: Birth weight doubles by 6 months, triples by 12M,
and by one year, they increase 50% in length.

o Developmental milestones

o A 9-month-old infant babbles, coo’s, and smiles at you while you grab
hands and head falls back this is head lag. Head lag should be gone by 4
months and the baby should have full head control.

o 1 month head falls back this is normal.

o 4 months head should come up with baby as you pull on arms.

o 6 or 9 months if the baby still has head lag then as the nurse, we should
recognize this as head lag and this is developmental delay.

o Object permanence – 9-month-old baby knows that if you play peek-a-
boo, they know you are still there even though they don’t see you.

o Animism – gives life to inanimate objects like a teddy bear is talking to
them. Toddlers and preschoolers do these ages 3, 4, and 5. The sun is
singing to me and the grass talks to me.

o Parrell Play – play around other children but won't play with them.
TODDLERS

o Creative play – imagination play like playing house or doctor.
PRESCHOOLERS' magical thinking occurs at this age too. If a child says
their imaginary friend did something, hold the child accountable. For
example, child says imaginary friend wrote on the wall you say well,
you’re the only one I see right now so you are going to help me clean this
up.

o Separation anxiety – we see it at 6 to 9 months and between 12 to 18
months, resolves at 3 years, crying and fussing when the caregiver isn’t
present. Protest – by 11 months the child knows when the parent is
leaving and starts to throw a tantrum and clings to the parent's legs, by a
certain age they can detach after 10 minutes.

, Stages of separation anxiety – starts at 6 to 8 months

Protest – 11 months old - see mom leave and cry, throw tantrum.

Despair – crying and screaming holding on to mom

Detachment – able to let go after 10 minutes.

If a child is in the hospital and has separation anxiety – give them familiar
toys and distract them so that they don’t see their parents leave and
encourage parents to stay. This is called rooming in.

o Interventions for this are family-centered care and encouraging parents
or caregivers to stay at the hospital.

o 5 - 6 months – rolls over

o 5 months belly to back

o 6 months - back to belly, should be able to roll over fully by 6 months.

o Infant safety – lay on back to sleep, 45-degree rear-facing car seat until 2
years, never leave unattended, no small toys can cause choking, age-
appropriate toys, always check the temperature of bath water (water can
burn infant),(no more than120 water heater). Make sure food and drink
shouldn’t be to hot. Cabinet locks and safety and outlet covers (Light
sockets). Gates for the top and bottom of the stairs. Avoid falls.

o Adolescents’ safety – wear helmets, no drinking, and driving wear a
seatbelt. Say no to drugs. How to know if they are abusing drugs or
alcohol, do random room inspections, check for damage to the inside of
the nose, pinpoint eyes, can’t sleep so inability to sleep, and nose bleeds.
Huffing can cause damage to the nose because adolescents smell and
inhale glue, paint thinner, markers, gas, and nail polish remover. This can
cause damage to the nose and nose bleeds.

o School–School-aged safety – wear a seatbelt, teach how to cross the
street wear a helmet.

o Preschoolers’ safety – Knowing how to swim, car seat safety booster seat
and seatbelt must fit properly.

o Developmental –

o How to achieve positive outcomes trust vs mistrust – how to achieve
positive outcome – take care of the baby when they coo or give you signs
