Qualifications for Certification: Pre-employment Requirements. - ANS- Be at least
eighteen (18) years of age as evidenced by a certified copy of said candidate's birth
certificate or other proof of birth acceptable to the Council.
Have a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent or any approved college degree
indicating successful completion of high school.
A recognized equivalent means a diploma awarded by any state based on a General
Education Development (GED) Test.
All peace officers certified after January 1, 2012, shall be required to apply for
recertification - ANS- every four (4) years from initial date of certification.
There are four levels of training available to Georgia Peace Officers: - ANS- basic;
refresher (in-service); career development; and specialized.
The Basic Training Course, of which you are a part, is a multi-week course designed to
provide cadets with the fundamental skills and knowledge necessary to execute the
duties of a Peace Officer. According to POST rule 464-5-.02 - ANS- officers are required
to attend and complete the basic course relating to the job they intend to perform.
City Police - ANS- In over 300 large and small cities, the city police department is the
principal law enforcement agency.
County Police - ANS- There are several county police departments in Georgia, and most
of them are found in heavily populated suburban areas. While the county police
department technically has jurisdiction
Sheriff's in Georgia - ANS- In addition to municipal departments, every county has a
Sheriff who is an elected, constitutionally authorized law enforcement officer. Sheriffs are
elected for a four-year term
District Attorney - ANS- The District Attorney of the county (and the Solicitor General of
the state court, if there is one) typically enters a case after the police work is done. In
legally complicated vice, fraud, bribery, and similar cases, he may participate in the
investigation and arrest of the suspects
State Law Enforcement Agencies - ANS- The primary role of state level law enforcement
agencies is to provide technical assistance to local police agencies
, Georgia State Patrol - ANS- The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) is the State's largest law
enforcement agency. The State Patrol is responsible for the enforcement of traffic laws
throughout the state; as a practical matter, this authority is exercised outside the cities
GBI - ANS- The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) provides investigative and
identification services to local, State, and Federal law enforcement agencies throughout
Georgia
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources: Wildlife Division - ANS- The Georgia
Department of Natural Resources is responsible for the conservation and protection of
natural and cultural resources throughout the state
Georgia State Drugs and Narcotics Agency - ANS- investigates violations of the Georgia
Controlled Substances Act and the Dangerous Drug Act.
Department of Revenue - ANS- is the chief tax law enforcement agency in the state.
Besides collecting taxes, the DOR is responsible enforcing laws relating to the control of
alcoholic beverages and tobacco
Motor Carrier Compliance Division - ANS- Safety (MCCD) conducts safety inspections of
commercial vehicles and highway shipments of hazardous materials.
Department of Driver Services - ANS- is the agency that conducts driver's tests, issues
driver's licenses, and maintains records on licensed drivers in Georgia.
FBI - ANS- is the most prominent Federal law enforcement agency. The FBI's jurisdiction
includes a wide range of responsibilities in the criminal, civil, and security fields. Among
these are espionage, sabotage, and other domestic security matters
DEA - ANS- enforce Federal drug laws and to prosecute those organizations and
individuals involved in the growing, manufacture, or distribution of controlled
substances appearing in or destined for the illicit traffic in the United States.
U.S. Secret Service - ANS- is authorized to detect and arrest any person committing any
offense against the laws of the United States relating to coins, currency, and securities of
the United States and of foreign governments.
United States Postal Service - ANS- The Inspection Service investigates burglaries,
robberies, assaults, mail fraud, theft of mail or possession of stolen mail, and sending of
prohibited items through the mail such as narcotics, pornography, and explosives.
US Marshals Service - ANS- include protecting the Federal judiciary; apprehending
federal fugitives; managing and selling seized assets acquired through illegal activities;
