, Before reading
This book was recommended to me by a friend. I chose the book
because the title looked to me so interesting. The isn’t that long it
has 112 pages. Also the picture on the front looked to me a little
Soviet. Because of the letters of the title. I think the book will be fun
to read and won’t take that long to read. I think this book will be
about animals in the Soviet Union. I haven’t seen a film version of
this book.

Chapter 1
Mr. Jones shut the the hen house for the night. But he was so drunk that he forgot to shut
the pop-holes. After that he went straight to bed. That night old Major (a talking white Boar)
got a dream. In his dream the animals in Mr. Jones farm rebelled against Mr. Jones. The
animals kicked Mr. Jones out of his farm an annexed the farm. They were going to meet the
day after. They waited till Mr. Jones went out of the farm. At the end of the barn old Major
waited for the animals to come. He was 12 years old, that’s old for a pig. After a while the
three dogs Bluebell, Jessie and Pincher came. Then the pigs, after them the pigeons came.
The cows and sheep came at the same time. After them the horses came, Boxer was a
strong horse. He was the strongest horse on the farm. Clover was a motherly mare. When
all the animals came, old Major started to talk. He told them about his dream. See page 3:
“Comrades, you have already heard about the strange dream I had last night”. “But I will
come to the dream later.”…….. Page 5: “And now, comrades, I will tell you about my dream
of last night. I cannot describe that dream to you. It was a dream of the earth as it will be
when Man has vanished. But it reminded me of something that I had long forgotten. Many
years ago, when I was a little pig, my mother and the other sows used to sing an old song of
which they knew only the tune and the first three words. I had known that tune in my
infancy, but it had long since passed out of my mind. Last night, however, it came back to
me in my dream. And what is more, the words of the song also came back-words, I am
certain, which were sung by the animals of long ago and have been lost to memory for
generations. I will sing you that song now, comrades. I am old and my voice is hoarse, but
when I have taught you the tune, you can sing it better for yourselves. It is called 'Beasts of
England'. “Beasts of England, beasts of Ireland,Beasts of every land and clime,Hearken to
my joyful tidingsOf the golden future time.Soon or late the day is coming,Tyrant Man shall
be o'erthrown,And the fruitful fields of EnglandShall be trod by beasts alone.Rings shall
vanish from our noses,And the harness from our back,Bit and spur shall rust forever,Cruel
whips no more shall crack.Riches more than mind can picture,Wheat and barley, oats and
hay,Clover, beans, and mangel-wurzelsShall be ours upon that day.
