ROLE MODEL: A role model is person who serves as a model in a particular behavioral role for another
person to mimic. The way one conducts themselves whilst in the presence of their athletes provides an
example of how they should behave. Being a positive role model is one of the most crucial roles of a
coach. A role model is someone who other individuals aspire to be like, either in the present or future.
Coaches will have a tremendous impact on their athletes through the way they act and their approach in
both sport and in life in general, so it is important to know that role modelling includes living a healthy
lifestyle.
An example of a role model in football is: Pep Guardiola.
It is said by many that Pep is a role model of this generation, in terms of the success he has achieved in
such a short duration of time. For example, He has been able to greatly increase the achievement of such
a great team like Bayern Munich.
It is said that he is repeating what he did during his career at Barcelona, where he won every single
competition the team played. He completely personifies true sportsmanship and is a perfect role model
when it comes to behaviour. This is clearly shown by his unblemished track record with all of his teams
and players. He treats his players as merely an extension of his own family. This unique player- coach
relationship is not easily achieved and it is clearly his ability as both a coach and a role model.
‘Barcelona achieved something else too, something more difficult to win than any official prize: the
admiration of the football world. Guardiola’s team revolutionised the 150-year-old sport. Coaches from
clubs large and small made pilgrimages to Barcelona’s training camp, notebooks in hand, hoping some of
the Guardiola gold dust might rub off on them.’ -
MOTIVATOR: Coaches are required to increase the effort and intensity that the players are exerting.
Always to adequate levels regarding age and ability. Coaches should refrain from just using insults and bad
language to achieve this, instead he will establish the factors players hold highest to focus concentration
and energy. It is the strength and the character that allows athletes to overcome adversity, setbacks,
disappointments and injuries.
The coach's role is to create the environment and to provide the opportunity for the athlete to express
their motivation in all they do. It is the coach's role to support the athlete at all times and to inspire
athletes to feel confident in themselves. Motivation is a really important aspect of successful coach.
An example of a motivating coach would be Glen Mills - Jamaica’s former head coach
