Developing Your Research Project – University of Southampton, Future 20/07/2018-
Learn 07/09/2018

https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/research-project

This course taught me invaluable material which accelerated my future research as
it made me intellectually curious. It covered topics I was never taught in school,
such as how to Harvard reference to avoid plagiarism, drafting, forms of
methodology, types of information and so much more.
Strategies for Essay Writing – Harvard College Writing Centre 10/09/2018

https://writingcenter.fas.harvard.edu/pages/strategies-essay-writing

This is the main source that I used to determine how to structure an essay, as I
have never written an essay as long as 5000 words before. This influenced me to
create an initial plan to understand how each section should be laid out.
Touched by the Devil: Inside the Minds of Psychopaths in Australia - Shea 13/09/2018
and Clarke

I went to Croydon library and borrowed this book. It focuses on cognitive
neuroscience. One issue is that I did not like the lack of description of treatments
for psychopathy themselves x- it evaluated them solely and almost expected you to
know how the treatments work. It also suffers culture bias by focusing on Australian
psychopaths only.
The Psychology of Evil by Philip Zimbardo – Ted Talks, published 23rd 18/09/2018
September 2008

Here I reinforced my previous knowledge about the Lucifer Effect and how this is a
possible environmental explanation of evil. I chose this to expand my knowledge
from what I had already learned in A Level Psychology (‘Social Influence’ topic of
my course). From this, it inspired me to watch all psychopathy-related Ted Talks
available, which were:
 ‘Strange answers to the psychopath test’ – Jon Ronson
 ‘Can you really tell if a kid is lying?’ – Kang Lee, which made me certain
that, with the help of my supervisor, I should further research child
psychopaths.
 ‘Exploring the mind of a killer’ – Jim Fallon
 ‘Why some people are more altruistic than others’ – Abigail Marsh
I avoided other playlists as this one (‘Inside the Minds of Psychopaths’) was the
only one that stayed specific to the biological and psychological sides of
psychopathy without bringing in philosophy or other areas of study.

Philip Zimbardo defends the Stanford Prison Experiment, his most famous
work – published June 28th 2018, Brian Resnick

https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2018/6/28/17509470/stanford-prison-
experiment-zimbardo-interview

This article discusses the reputability of the Stanford Prison Experiment –
Zimbardo has been accused of making up some findings and some participants
claimed to be acting. I will use this information to avoid talking about the
experiment in my EPQ, or evaluating its validity if I do. Perhaps prisons encourage

Psychopath – published 2000

https://www.reddit.com/r/Documentaries/comments/5ztuhm/
psychopaths_crime_psychology_documentary_2000/

This was the first documentary that appeared when I typed “psychopathy
documentary” into Google. The other was a series called ‘What Makes a
Psychopath?’ by BBC Two, but this focuses solely on psychopathic serial killers
which I didn’t think was applicable to the psychopathic population as a whole. This
documentary, however, made me aware of the evidence supporting the nature
debate, treatments for psychopathy and how to measure psychopathy using Hare’s
PCL-R.

Psychopathy: an introduction to biological findings and their implications –
Andrea Glenn and Adrian Raine, published 2014

I found an MSc in Abnormal and Clinical Psychology offered in the University of
Swansea, where this book (alongside ‘Without Conscience: the disturbing world of
the psychopaths among us’ – Robert Hare (1999)) was found in the reading list. . I
like how this book focuses on determining causes of psychopathy (e.g. genetics,
hormones etc. determined by brain imaging) before reaching a conclusion about
treatment types and prevention, which is the type of structure that I would like to
use in my dissertation.

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms in relation to psychopathic
traits and aggression among psychiatrically hospitalized children: ADHD
symptoms as a potential moderator – Becker et al, published May 2013
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23436456
ADHD symptoms were found to relate ODD to narcissism and proactive
aggression. This relates to child psychopathy and is a journal so will contain more
reliable information. I used this alongside
https://childmind.org/guide/oppositional-defiant-disorder/what-is-it/ to get a
complete understanding of how causes and treatments can relate to psychopaths
of all ages, (and not just adult psychopaths).
“Psychopathy” – Wikipedia, last updated 7th October 2018 at 00:37 (UTC) 08/10/2018

I used this page to help me decide which specific theory I wanted to focus on – that
is environmental and evolutionary.
Defending psychopathy: an argument from values and moral responsibility - 11/10/2018
Luca Malatesti and John McMillan, published 11th January 2014

https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/6d38/
ff21a04084d04d20d0f184344338781cf0be.pdf

I used this to determine how to structure my essay (shown in a separate
document). I also steered clear of books from here onwards as most are either
potentially biased or are simply difficult to get a hold of (as my local libraries are not
well stocked and there are limited resources online).
