A brave new world
Het is moeilijk om de geest (mind) te bestuderen, omdat we niet makkelijk
kunnen observeren, meten of manipuleren en daarbij is de geest het meeste
complexiteit entiteit wat er bestaat. Om dit toch te kunnen bestuderen is er een
interdisciplinaire benadering nodig, wat nu bekent staat als ‘cognitive science’.
- Filosofie, psychologie, taalkunde (semantisch), KI, robotica en
neurowetenschap
Het theoretische perspectief zit in het idee van ‘computation’ oftewel ‘information
processing’. De geest wordt gezien als een informatie verwerkingscomputer.
Deze heeft een mentale representeert en transformeert en manipuleert deze
informatie.

Representation
Een representatie is iets wat staat voor iets anders. Er zijn vier cruciale
aspecten:
1. Representation bearer: een mens of computer moet eerst een
representatie herkennen.
2. Content: een representatie moet staan voor een of meerdere objecten
oftewel referenties
3. Een representatie moet ook “grounded” oftewel gegrond zijn. er moet dus
een manier zijn waarop een representatie en zijn referentie aan elkaar
relateren.
4. Een representatie moet worden geïnterpreteerd bij een interpreteerde of
het nou de representation bearer is of iemand anders maakt niet uit.

Menselijke en geestelijke representatie zijn semantisch, want zij hebben een
betekenis. De betekenis komt voort uit de relatie tussen de representatie en het
onderwerp, deze relatie is intentionality, wat betekent dat het meteen
vastgekoppeld is aan het object wat er is. Hierbij speelt de relatie tussen inputs
en outputs een belangrijke rol deze relatie is bekend als: an appropriate causal
relation.
Symbolen kunnen worden samengevoegd tot fysieke symbool systemen oftewel
formal systems.

Types of Representation

Declarative knowledge wordt gebruikt bij het representeren van feiten meestal
door verbale communicatie. Procedural knowledge vertegenwoordigd

,vaardigheid. Het vertelt ons hoe we iets moeten doen en wordt ook
gedemonstreerd.

Computation
Representaties zijn het begin bij mentale processen maar kunnen niet op zichzelf
staan.
The Tri-Level Hypothesis
Elk informatieproces heeft verschillende niveau’s:
1. Computational level  twee taken: specificatie van het probleem en het
deconstrueren van het probleem
2. Algoritmic level  algoritme en een formele procedure die aan de slag
gaat met de representatie.
3. Implementational level  waaruit bestaat een informatie processor
Differing Views of Representation and Computation
Tijdens het informatie processeren (computation) is de computer a formal
symbol manipulator.
- Een systeem is een formal als het gegenereerd wordt d.m.v. regels.
o Die set regels wordt de syntax genoemd.
o Werkt ook met representaties los van de content van die
representaties. Een proces kan dus worden gekoppeld aan een
symbool los van zijn betekenis.

Een meer realistische kijk op representatie komt vanuit een dynamisch
perspectief binnen de psychologie: de geest is contant in verandering want het
past zich aan, aan nieuwe informatie.

What is philosophy?
Filosofie is de zoektocht naar wijsheid en kennis. Zij definieert problemen,
bekritiseert modellen en zoeken naar mogelijkheden voor vervolgonderzoek.
- Metafysica: onderzoekt de natuur van realiteit
o Mind-body probleem, of de geest deel is van de fysieke
materialistische wereld of niet.
- Epistemologie: kijkt naar kennis en vraagt zich af wat kennis is en hoe
deze kennis wordt.

The mind-body problem: what is mind?
Het mind-body problem laat zien hoe mentale/psychologische aspecten zijn
verbonden met fysieke aspecten.
- Metafysiek  de natuur van de geest
Hierbij zijn er twee opvattingen:
1. De hersenen zijn fysiek en dus van materie die we kunnen meten en
begrijpen. De geest is ook een fysiek iets.
2. De hersenen zijn fysiek, maar de geest is meer. De geest is geen materie
en bestaat uit iets wat lijkt op een ziel. Het maakt wel gebruik van de
hersenen  “the ghost in the machine”.
Monisme: er is maar een soort staat/materie in het universum. Er is dus geen
substantieel verschil tussen de geest en de materie.
- Aristoteles: de geest kan verschillende patronen van activiteit ondergaan,
maar het blijven fysieke staten en blijven materie.
Dualisme: zowel mentale als fysieke substantie zijn mogelijk.
- Plato: de geest en het lichaam bestaan in twee verschillende werelden. De
geest bestaat in vormen die immaterieel, nietbestaand en eternal zijn. het
lichaam bestaat in een materiele, extended en perishable wereld.

Monism
Binnen het monisme zijn er twee keuzes, het universum is ofwel mentaal
(idealisme) ofwel fysiek (materialisme/physicalism). Physicalists geloven dat het
universum bestaat uit een soort substantie. De identity theory is een vorm van
physicalisme, hierbij wordt gedacht dat de geest de hersenen is.

Dualism
- Classical dualism: de geest controleert het lichaam m.b.v. de
pijnappelklier (Descartes).
- Substance dualism: de geest en het lichaam bestaan uit compleet
verschillende substanties (mentale substanties of fysieke substanties).
- Property dualism: de geest en het lichaam kunnen van hetzelfde materiaal
zijn maar hebben verschillende eigenschappen.

Functionalism: are minds limited to brains?
Volgens het functionalisme zijn mentale staten niet alleen zelf fysieke staten
maar zorgen ze ook voor het functioneren van die fysieke staten.

o Nativism = nature over nurture
 Reflexen  neurale verbindingen
o Rationalism = hetzelfde als nativism maar met het bestaan van
aangeboren ideeën zoals God.
