Gebruik: bij feiten, gewoonten en regelmatigheden. Eigenlijk gewoon de tegenwoordige tijd.
De volgende woorden komen dan vaak in de zin voor: sometimes, often, always, never, usually
Vorm:
I/you/we/they: hele ww
he/she/it: hele ww + (e)s
Eindigt het woord op een s-klank, dan wordt (e)s toegevoegd go wordt goes en do wordt does
Eindigt een woord op -y, dan wordt dit vervangen door -ies.
Vragende zinnen
I/you/we/they: do + hele ww
He/she/it: does + hele ww
Ontkennende zinnen
I/you/we/they: don't + hele ww
he/she/it: doesn't + hele ww
Let vooral op de vormen van het werkwoord ‘’to be’’

Gebruik: Als iets nu aan de gang is.
Vorm: to be + ww + -ing

Je mag in deze zinnen ook de verkorte vorm gebruiken.

Gebruik: Als iets in het verleden gebeurd is en ook afgelopen is. Gewoon de verleden tijd dus.
Vaak worden daarvoor tijdsaanduidingen gebruikt. Bijvoorbeeld:

Vorm: Bij de past simple gebruiken we zowel regelmatige als onregelmatige werkwoorden.
Bij regelmatige werkwoorden komt er –(e)d achter.
He relaxed on the beach.
Bij onregelmatige werkwoorden gebruik je de juiste vorm.
He went to a concert.
Zorg dus dat je de onregelmatige werkwoorden goed kent! 😉

Gebruik: Wanneer iets in het verleden een tijdje voortduurde.
Op een tijdlijn kun je dat zo zien:
Vaak is er iets gebeurd tijdens de actie in het verleden waar de simple past voor gebruikt wordt. Dat
ziet er zo uit:
Vorm: was/were + ww + -ing
Bevestigend:
–> I was reading the newspaper.
–> We were having dinner at a restaurant.
Ontkennend:
–> I wasn’t reading the newspaper.
–> We weren’t having dinner at a restaurant.
Vragend:
–> Was I reading the newspaper?
–> Weren’t we having dinner at a restaurant.
In de Nederlandse vertaling komt bij een continuous vaak de woorden ‘aan het’ voor: ik was de krant
aan het lezen.
