C121 Task 2 A. Explain (suggested length of 1–2 paragraphs) the reasons for the rise of partisan politics
in the Early Republic (i.e., major conflicts and concerns, development of the First Party System).
The original federalists wanted to adopt the constitution and the Anti federalists were against
adopting the constitution. The Revolution in France gave many Americans hope that they too could
overthrow the new Federalists wanted to adopt the new constitution. They wanted to create a strong
centralized government. The democratic Republican Party wanted a less centralized government and
more individual liberties and state rights. Later the struggle changed to the Federalists and the
democratic republicans. There were several issues that the two parties did not agree on. One of these
was Hamilton’s financial plans and his proposals to get America on solid financial footing. He wanted to
create a national bank modeled after the National Bank of England. Madison and Jefferson felt that the
Constitution did not give Congress the power to establish such a bank. Madison and Jefferson both felt
sympathy for the French Revolution and that America should help. Hamilton on the other hand that
France was a prime example of republicanism gone wrong. (Norton, 2015)
B. Discuss the development of the Second Party System (suggested length of 1–2 pages) by doing the
following:
1. Compare the platforms of the Whig and Democratic parties.
The Democratic Party wanted to expand westward rapidly because they saw many opportunities
for landownership independent individuals. Whigs on the other hand wanted to develop the nation
within its current boundaries. The Whigs wanted and activist government. They favored social reforms
and special interests as long as they promoted the general welfare of the people and they saw a society
being ruled from the top down. Democrats did not support corporate charters, a national bank, or paper
money, but the Whigs supported all three. Democrats supported a limited government. They believed
that the wealthy had benefited from special favors that they had received. (Norton, 2015)
