Origins of the Black Power Movement


There was racial discrimination in the Northern states

- Civil Rights activists were continually beaten and abused
- Some people were unhappy with the non-violent tactics of the Civil Rights Movement



Riots in the Ghettos

- Bad living conditions in the ghettos led to general dissatisfaction
o Overcrowding, inadequate schools and housing
- Housing was usually owned by white landlords
o They would exploit their tennants
o High rent and ill-maintained apartments
- Schools did not receive money
o Bad standard of education led to a cycle of poverty



Bitterness accumulated and made people turn to the Black Power Movement
