Opsomming (Summary)

Adriaan is senuweeagtig en geniet niks wat om hom aangaan nie. Hy is in ‘n saal, waar twee
seuns besig is om in hulle karatepakke om mekaar te beweeg. Die twee seuns is ouer as wat
hy is. Die seuns is besig om te stoei. Die een seun is die verdediger, die ander die aggressor.
Daar is ‘n meisie met bruin hare waarin Adriaan belang stel. Sy kom van Vredenburg af en is
baie goed met karate. Sy het ‘n rooi lint in haar hare en ‘n groterige postuur. Sy is bekend vir
haar goeie katas.
Adriaan gaan buitentoe omdat daar te veel beweging in die saal is en wonder of hy te ernstig
oor karate is. Hy ervaar altyd spanning voor ‘n kompetisie en doen dan sleg wanneer hy katas
moet doen. Hy loop rond en hoor ‘n vrou wat sê dat kinders iets moet hê om hulle besig te
hou, anders sal hulle by die verkeerde goed betrokke raak. Adriaan gaan na die toilet toe en
skrik vir twee universiteit seuns wat daarbinne is. Hulle is besig om te verklee. Hulle het
hokkiestokke by hulle. Die een seun terg vir Adriaan en sê dat hy ook karate gedoen het. Sy
styl was Goju-ryu. Adriaan se styl is Shotokan.
Adriaan gaan terug saal toe en sien die meisie in wie hy belangstel. Sy is besig om ‘n kata uit
te over. Sy doen baie goed. Sy en Adriaan kk vir mekaar, today Adriaan wegkyk. Adriaan
wonder of ‘n mens, wanneer jy verlief raak, snaakse gedagtes dink. Hy dink aan tiepiese
cliché’s soos “Daar’s ‘n afgrond tussen ons” of “My hart sing duisend deuntjies” of “My hart
behoort aan jou”. Adriaan probeer liewers op die bewegings om hom te fokus. Hy hoor weer
‘n vrou praat. Sy is besig om advies vir ‘n geveg te gee.
Dit is Adriaan se beurt om ‘n kata te doen. In die begin gaan dit goed, maar in die helfte van
die kata raak hy bewus van almal om hom en die mense wat na hom kyk. Hy vergeet wat om
te doen en loop van die mat af. Hy gaan buitentoe. Hy begin na ‘n man kyk wat sweefstok
oefeninge doen.
Die meisie met die bruin hare kom praat met hom. Haar naam is Katrien. Sy weet wie Adriaan
is en spot dat hy ‘n legende is omdat hy nie so goed doen nie. Sy sê dat sy katas tien keer ‘n
dag oefen sodat sy hulle nie vergeet nie. Sy kyk ook na die sweefstokartieste. Sy sê dat een
van hulle uit sy stywe klere gaan bars.
By die prysuitdeling kry Katrien ‘n goue madalje. Adriaan is bang dat hy ‘n simatieprys gaan
kry, maar kry gelukkig niks nie. Hy kyk vir Katrien en sien dat haar oë liggroen is. Adriaan vra
of sy by die WP-proewe sal wees. Sy sal daar wees en merk op dat dit ‘n dag vol lywe sal wees.
Sy vra of hy sal deelneem. Adriaan wonder of hy moet, aangesien hy nie goed doen nie en hy
dink dat die Japanese meesters sal huil as hulle hom in aksie moes sien. Adriaan wonder hoe
hy ‘n pers belt in karate gekry het. Hy sal wel deelneem. Katrien moet gaan en sy herhinner
vir Adriaan om tien maal per dag sy katas te oefen. Hy voel beter en voel of hy by die
byeenkoms behoort.
