Hoofdstuk 2 Cornea en Sclera
De buitenste bindweefsellaag van het oog heeft de verschijning van twee samengevoegde bollen.

 De kleinere voorste transparante bol is het cornea (hoornvlies).
o Heeft een straal van ongeveer 8 mm.
 De grotere achterste ondoorzichtige bol is de sclera (oogwit).
o Heeft een straal van ongeveer 12 mm.
o De bol is niet symmetrisch (de diameter is niet 24 mm
horizontaal en verticaal).

Cornea de afmetingen
De transparante cornea blijkt anterior (voorkant) ovaal te zijn.

 Diameter: 12 mm horizontaal
 Diameter: 11 mm verticaal

Posterior (achterkant) bekeken lijkt de cornea rond.

 Diameter: 11,7 mm horizontaal
 Diameter: 11,7 mm verticaal




In profiel, de cornea heeft een elliptische vorm in plaats van een bolvorm, waarbij de
kromming in het midden steiler in het centrum en vlakker aan de rand.

 Kromte straal centrum van de cornea: 7,8 mm
 Kromte straal aan de randen van de cornea: 6,5 mm

Belangrijkste functie:

 Brekend vermogen
o Ontstaat door het verschil in brekingsindex tussen lucht en de cornea.
Dit komt tot stand door:
 De kromtestraal
 Gladheid van het voorste oppervlak
 Regelmatigheid van de lagen van het stroma
 De afwezigheid van bloedvaten en myelineschede rond de zenuwen.


Het voorste oppervlak van de cornea is bedekt door de traanfilm, deze staat in verbinding met de
buitenlucht (of met gesloten ogen met de conjunctiva aan de binnenzijde van de oogleden).
Traanklier
Traanfilm bestaat uit 3 lagen: Waterlaag

mucuslaag
1. Lipidelaag: lipide komen uit de klieren van Meibom. Lipidelaag
2. Waterlaag: wordt verzorgd door de traanklier. wag
3. Mucuslaag: gobletcellen en het gelaagd epitheel van de
cornea en de conjuctiva.

Aan de achterzijde van de cornea wordt het oppervlak begrensd
door het kamerwater, dat circuleert in de voorste oogkamer.



De cornea wordt niet doorbloedt.


De cornea is doorzichtig doordat:

 Geen bloedvaten
 Collageen fibrillen:
o Op vaste afstand t.o.v. elkaar
 Lichtfrequenties tillen precies goed dat ze tussen de fibrillen doorgaan.



De cornea krijgt voeding op drie manieren:

1. Vanuit de traanfilm
2. Diffusie uit de limbale plexus (capillaire bloedvaten van de rand).
3. Van voeding via de voorste oogkamer.
