C229 Task 1 Part 2 Social Media Campaign

name

Western Governors University

Part 2: Social Media Campaign

B. Risk of deficient knowledge of breastfeeding related to a lack of breastfeeding

education as evidenced by data by the CDC.

B1. Breastfeeding is the best way for a mother to feed her baby. There are many health

benefits from breastfeeding that formula does not offer. There is a huge lack of resources

for the promotion of breastfeeding in the community. There is some support available to

these moms but it is not offered freely. Tracking down a lot of these resources was really

difficult and it was even harder getting in touch with the people in charge of these

resources. The breastfeeding goal by Healthy People 2020 is 81.9-92.8 of infants being

breastfed (Healthy People 2020, 2017). Trinity Hospital in Minot, ND (Ward County) is

at 79.6% for the number of infants that go home breastfeeding (North Dakota Department

of Health, 2017).

B1a. There are some breastfeeding classes available to nursing mothers, however,

it much isn’t information that is given freely. These moms have to find these classes

independently. Site visits to different offices didn’t show a lot of promotion of

breastfeeding with the exception of the visit to the midwives offices. The pediatrician’s

, C229 Task 1 2

offices had a lot of information and resources available for mothers who had already

chosen to breastfeed. There needs to be more promotion before delivery. The WIC office

is a great resource to those who utilize it. The employees here promote breastfeeding to

pregnant moms who come to visits while pregnant. One problem with this, however, is

that the majority of the women who end up utilizing WIC use it only after giving birth

and many have decided to formula feed instead. WIC provides nutrition to pregnant and

breastfeeding mothers. They also provide vouchers for formula and food for infants and

older children. There are some groups that have been created by community members for

the promotion of breastfeeding but many are not very active.

B1b. The cause of these concerns is lack of information. People need to speak up

in the community and fight for these resources. It is still a somewhat uncomfortable topic

for many people to discuss and there is not a lot of support in regards to breastfeeding.

The Senate Bill 2344 set in place laws to protect a woman’s right to breastfeed in any

location including public and private locations (2009). This law also requires employers

to support breastfeeding by allowing flexible breaks and a clean, private area for these

moms to utilize.

B2. There is evidence that proves that practices based in the hospital can affect both the

duration and exclusivity of breastfeeding for the first year (Bartick et al, 2009).

According to this journal, there are many approaches that can improve breastfeeding. The

education of those who make decision in the hospital by using publications and

educational seminars, for example, can increase the importance of breastfeeding

promotion. Recognizing excellence to those facilities that are designated as “Baby-

Friendly” will increase the importance due to competition among other facilities.
