Affective disposition theory
- Disposition = relation formed with characters based on actions and motives
o Depends on individuals moral standards and experiences
- Affective (empathy) and cognitive (moral judgement) like or dislike a character
- Enjoyment: liked character getting rewarded and disliked character getting punished
Suspense
- Suspense = anticipation of outcome: suggestion of happy or sad outcomes
- Affective dispositions (empathy/feeling for character) and outcome uncertainty (character in jeopardy)
- Enjoy because of: escapism, catharsis, excitation transfer theory
- Moral disengagement cues: moral justification, dehumanization
- Ambiguous character: no clear disposition but more realistic
Disposition theory of humour
- Disparagement of groups we don’t belong to are funny
- Continuum of affective dispositions: from happy to no feeling to sad
- Responses to jokes can vary across time: emotional state differs
Disposition theory of drama
- Enjoyment rises when liked characters experience a positive outcome
o And when disliked characters experience a negative outcome
- Empathy is key to feel for character and therefor enjoy
o Same applied to sport spectatorship
- Disposition influenced by: empathy level, moral, actor, age, story scheme
o Differ per person because individuals differ
