‘How media censorship and disinformation during the Gezi Park Protest in Istanbul,
Turkey was covered and handled by international media at the time of and after the
protest in 2013?’

Penguins and pepper spray: A study on the alteration of reality in news reporting

word count: 4006

, Abstract

This paper is a comparative analysis on the actions of local and international television news
corporations during the beginning of the 2013 Gezi Park protests in Istanbul, Turkey.
Previous research showcases that delegitimizing actions taken by traditional news towards
social protests that challenge the status quo has been normative. Deviating from a convention,
the polarized media environment in Turkey provides a clear cross-section of what local news
sources use in their construct of reality. Throughout the protest, the local news sources fail to
provide even a simple depiction yet an in-depth situation analysis that is present in
international media. The paper deals with CNN and BBC which have Turkish branches that
refuse to broadcast due to their editorial and economic obligations to the government.
Contextual framing and textual analysis is used in order to coherently address the sources.
Results of the censorship and disinformation ended up making the protest gain more
supporters. The impact of the protest was inflamed due to the illegitimate marginalization of
the protesters both by the government and the pro-government news outlets.. The findings of
the study provide a new understanding of the actions of authoritarian governments and the
international response they receive in the scope of social protests.
