UNIT 2: Equality, Diversity and Rights in Health and Social care
M2. Assess the influence of a recent national initiative promoting anti discriminatory
practice.
From the previous courseworks, we have showed and emphasized the importance of anti-
discriminatory practice in working in the health and social care settings. Assessments and
explanations of the effects of discriminatory practice has also been shown and now, in this
task, we will talk about the national initiatives that was provided by the government to
promote anti discriminatory practice. Here are some:
CARE ACT 2014
The Care Act 2014 is a legislation implemented on 2015 by the
UK Government which aims for local authorities to provide carers
assessments and needs assessment so that they will know who
needs support, what the individual is eligible for and what they
can do for them. This law also initiates local authorities to focus
and care for the well being of the individual that is subjected to
the assessment whereas if deemed to be eligible, they will do
what’s best for their well being to be optimum.
In turn, by providing assessments, the Care Act 2014 influences
diversity and equality by promoting and showing that individuals have different needs
based on each assessment that local authorities will conduct. It demonstrates that
anyone who will be subjected to the assessment will have a different result from other
individuals. Furthermore, it also emphasizes that everyone is diverse and equal from one
another through the provision of the same quality and criteria for the assessments and
having different results every time.
Through this, Diversity and Equality is implemented and valued by the local authorities
which in turn not only promotes it but also influences other health and social care
practitioners to value it and realise its importance.
In addition to that, the Care Act 2014 also influences Individualised care by recognising
that each individual has different ways in achieving an optimum level of functioning
and that individual care is important to acquire it. With the use of Individualised care,
not only is the individual’s well being focused on. It also allows them to be heard as to how
and what are the ways they can acquire the wellbeing they need.
Not only that, it allows them to be empowered by going beyond
their potential and what they think they could do.
In conclusion, the Care Act 2014 allows local authorities to
provide assessments equally to individuals and recognise that
each and everyone will have different needs every time. This
shows that each individual subjected to an assessment is diverse
and equal from one another. It also emphasizes that everyone
has different ways in achieving the well being they desire to have and that individualised
