UNIT 2: Equality, Diversity and Rights in Health and Social care
M3. Discuss Difficulties that may arise when implementing anti-discriminatory
practice in health and social care settings.
For a long time, the government have been trying their best, as well as the healthcare
practitioners, to create a healthcare setting that does not practice any form of discrimination
and is suitable for everyone. But, in doing so, there are many difficulties that arises when
implementing it. Those difficulties are:
1. No staff training and poor work practice.
In order to provide a service up to the standards of the
government and practices the proper values, the health care
practitioner must have the proper knowledge, skills and
attitude that is required and needed. Not only that, it is also
important that the health care practitioner is able to
implement care based on the service user’s needs and
wants while safeguarding them at the same time.
Furthermore, good work practice is also needed which can
be obtained through respect, the 6 C’s which are: Care,
Compassion, Communication, Courage, Competence,
Commitment and many more. To achieve these things, a health care staff must have the
required training essential in the work they are doing and good practice.
If a staff works in the healthcare setting without these proper training, knowledge and
experience. They will be providing care that will put service users at risk and will not
be able to understand the sensitivity and vulnerability of the individuals accessing
health care services. Furthermore, they will also become a hazard for patients and will
not be able to realise how diverse people are and that everyone has different needs
and wants that they need to attain in order to achieve their optimum level of
functioning which might result for discriminatory service especially if a patient has
different needs than others.
In addition to that, having poor work practice means that discrimination is more likely
to happen since the proper values and attitude needed for a good work practice is not
implemented which will make service user’s
physical, mental, emotional and social aspects
uncared for.
An example of that is in the case of the carers in
the care home named Winterbourne view.
Because these carers does not have the proper
staff training about safeguarding and also does not
have the proper work practice, they placed the
residents at risk by abusing them physically,
emotionally, mentally and socially leaving them
traumatized and worsening their condition.
