This piece of work covers all of the criteria for P1, M1, D1 in Public Services Unit 4: Understanding discipline in the uniformed public services. I have achieved a distinction in this unit by Pearsons Edexcel in 2019. I achieved a D*D* in the first year of public services. I hope this helps!

Shannon W Unit 4:Understanding Discipline in the uniformed public services P1, M1, D1

Discipline is essential for all of the uniformed public services in order to maintain order. Discipline is
having a calm and controlled behaviour; it is also when you obey instructions that are given to you.
For example; if you are told by your drill sergeant to do 50 press ups, then you are going to do it.
This is because it is an instruction that you have been given. The need for discipline in the uniformed
public services is vital in order to; stay focused, to keep up high standards, to be an example to the
public, to follow procedures, to have structure, for overall performance and behaviour, to follow
orders and finally to obey them for respect. The need for discipline is important for any uniformed
public services because it ensures they are well-formed and respected as well as appearing smart at
all times. It also ensures order remains within the services and without it, the services would have no
ranking structure and no clear command.

All of the uniformed public services have the need for discipline. One of my examples is the RAF. The
RAF has various different qualities which are both positive and negative. There are many positives
that come with discipline within the public services because you are representing that force which
will be looked up to by some people. In the RAF, you need to have a lot of self-discipline, much like
any other military based service, in order to maintain their standards by cleaning your own uniform
and presenting it correctly as well as, looking after yourself and doing your own fitness then having
the discipline to plan and achieve your own fitness goals.

An example of when someone doesn’t have any self-discipline is if someone were to act out of line,
while wearing the RAF uniform, it will make the force look irresponsible and people will have
disbelief in the force as a whole for not enforcing self-discipline. When wearing a uniform, it gives an
individual the sense of duty and honour and they should be respectful and honourable when
wearing it. Another example for a lack of discipline is a case study about an ‘RAF Puma helicopter
crash’ that was marked by lack of discipline. An article on the ‘Telegraph’ website stated that the
crew were making ‘laughing and whooping noises moments before the aircraft banked’. A narrative
verdict, called Mr Fell, also quoted that the crew were ‘inexperienced’. From reading this article, it
appears that the lack of discipline to maintain and follow orders has caused a fatality and it could
have all been down to the pilot, who had just over 500 hours flying time and a lot of experience, not
setting any ground rules for the crew; this too could be due to the lack of discipline.

During basic training, all of the armed forces, including the RAF, use rewards and punishment. In the
RAF, they punish the recruits to ensure they are disciplined enough so they learn from their mistakes
and maintain their set standards. It can also help create a better soldier overall. For example, they
do this by making them do a set number of push ups as a result of their mistake. The recruits are
then rewarded for their service and leadership skills, perhaps by promoting them to a lance corporal;
after the promotion, they can then work their way up the ranks so they can have authority.
However, in some cases when people are promoted and have authority over others, they begin to
lose self-discipline and begin to let their own standards slack because there is no on there to raise
their standards. M1

My other example of a uniformed public service who needs discipline is the police force. The police
force are the ones who mainly attend most events and are there to enforce the law. This means they
have to maintain a high level of discipline in order to do so. It is a necessity for police to follow rules
and regulations to ensure they’re enforcing the law correctly and not using their powers as an
advantage like the one police officer did to Ian Tomlinson. If the police officer, who pushed
Tomlinson over, was disciplined he would not have done what he did. As a result of this incident, in
some situations it could had an effect on social order which means it can lead to civilians taking law
into their own hands or they could lose faith in the police when they’re dealing with problems. The
